Almost nobody knows what they actually mean.
“My God, my God, why have you forsaken me.”

That line isn't a cry of defeat. It's a direct quote. The opening line of Psalm 22 — a psalm King David wrote roughly a thousand years before Jesus was even born.
Jesus wasn't losing His faith. He was quoting Scripture. And in ancient Jewish tradition, when a rabbi opened with the first line of a psalm, He was invoking the whole thing. Anyone standing at Golgotha who knew the Torah would've caught it instantly.
And here's the part that's hard to get past. David wrote Psalm 22 roughly a thousand years before Rome had even invented crucifixion as a method of execution. But read what he wrote:
“They pierced my hands and my feet... they divide my garments among them and cast lots for my clothing... I can read all his bones.”
— PSALM 22, ~1000 BC
Crucifixion wasn't even a concept yet. David had no way to picture it. And yet it's sitting there in the Hebrew Scriptures, a thousand years ahead of the event that would fulfill it.
AND HERE'S THE PART THAT CHANGES EVERYTHING
Psalm 22 does not end in agony. Its final line is a declaration of total victory, captured in a single Hebrew word: "He has done it." The same declaration Jesus made with His last breath— "It is finished."
Jesus did not die quoting the beginning of Psalm 22. He died fulfilling the end of it. Not in defeat. In victory. And most Christians have read right past it their entire lives.
HERE'S THE HONEST PART
I'm not going to tell you that moment is printed on the Psalms page of our guide. It isn't.
